Hasil penelitian staf pengajar Institut Pertanian Bogor menunjukkan sarang lebah madu Trigona spp. mengandung senyawa antibakteri. Ekstrak propolis, atau sejenis resin yang diambil dari sarang lebah Trigona spp, memberikan efek antibakteri pada bakteri gram positif Staphilococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis maupun pada bakteri gram negatif Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Penelitian Zaenal Hasan, staf pengajar biokimia, Fakultas Matematika dan IPA IPB, menunjukkan uji aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak propolis lebah madu jenis Trigona spp lebih efektif menghambat pertumbuhan semua jenis bakteri uji dibandingkan dengan propolis komersil.
Hasil penelitian berjudul “Potensi Propolis Lebah Madu Trigona spp Sebagai Bahan Antibakteri” disampaikan Hasan dalam seminar hasil-hasil penelitian dosen muda IPB beberapa waktu yang lalu.
Propolis adalah salah satu produk alami lebah madu yang banyak manfaatnya. Penelitian khasiat propolis sudah banyak dilakukan terutama propolis dari lebah madu jenis Apis spp, belum pernah ada penelitian propolis dari Trigona spp. Propolis adalah sejenis resin dari sarang lebah madu.
Zaenal Hasan mengatakan propolis lebah madu mempunyai banyak manfaat untuk pengobatan. “Karena kandungan bahan kimia serta komposisinya yang kompleks dan beragam membuat propolis mempunyai khasiat yang bermacam-macam, di antaranya sebagai antikanker, antivirus, antibiotik dan antihiperlipidemia,” ujarnya.
Lebah madu Trigona spp. menghasilkan madu lebih sedikit bila dibandingkan dengan lebah madu jenis Apis spp. dan jarang diternakkan. Akan tetapi diperkirakan kandungan propolisnya lebih banyak.
Zaenal mengekstrak bahan propolis dengan metode Harborne dan Matienzo&Lamonera. Setelah ekstrak propolis didapat, perlakuan dilanjutkan dengan proses pemekatan.
Kemudian ekstrak pekat dilarutkan ke dalam propilen glikol sebelum uji fitokimia dan uji aktivitas bakteri. Analisis fitokimia dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui golongan senyawa-senyawa aktif pada ekstrak propolis secara kualitatif.

It is no secret that I have a very deep and personal relationship with God.
